Epidavros

Palea Epidavros or Archea Epidavros is a small town in the Argolis prefecture of the Peloponnese . It is built in the same place where the ancient city of Epidavros was located, on top of and surrounding a small peninsula between two bays, on the coast of the Saronic Gulf. It is situated 34 km East of Nafplio and 60 km South of Korinthos. Its population is 1618 inhabitants according to the 2011 census.

At the foot of the akropolis of Ancient Epidavros is located the so-called "Small Theatre of Epidavros" . This smaller theatre was built in the middle of the 4th century BC. It was re-discovered in 1970 and excavated in 1972. Its capacity is 2000 seats. Every summer cultural events take place in the theatre, during "Musical July". This event is a part of the much bigger annual "Athens-Epidavros Festival".

Epidavros does not only entail antiquities, theatrical performances, history and culture. It also entail nature, recreation, fun and rural life. The agricultural tourism finds its culmination each year with the organization of the “Agrotourism Fair” featuring all the products of the Epidavrian land. The long tradition in dairy products is lost in the mist of time. The same goes for its awarded bread products. All these products, along with virgin olive oil, pure honey, citrus fruit, pure animal products as well as fresh fish, coming from the local sea-waters gave rise to the "Epidavros Fair". This big celebration of agrotourism launched in 1998 and held each summer within the framework of “Musical July”.

Since Palea Epidavros is a coastal town, there are a number of beaches. The most famous is Kalamaki beach. Other beaches are Polemarcha, Gialasi and Vagionia.

Only 13 kilometers away are located the ancient Theater of Epidavros and the archaeological site of the Sanctuary of Asklepion. The Ancient Theatre of Epidavros is a theatre in the city of Epidavros, located on the southeast end of the sanctuary dedicated to the ancient Greek God of medicine, Asclepius. It is built on the west side of Cynortion Mountain and belongs to Municipality of Epidavros . It is considered to be the most perfect ancient Greek theatre  in regards to acoustics and aesthetics.

The theatre has been sporadically used to host major musical events as well. In the framework of the Epidavros Festival, well-known Greek and foreign actors and singers have appeared  such as Helen Mirren, Peter Stein, Sir Peter Hall, Nana Mouskouri,  Maria Callas and many more.
